Singye Dzong: the Legendary Lion Fortress

Singye DzongSingye DzongSingye Dzong is located at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters above sea level; it is a three-day walk uphill from Lhuentse in Eastern Bhutan.

Singye Dzong in Kurtoe has been deemed sacred as Guru Rinpoche meditated there during the mid-eighth century.

According to legend, in the mid 8th century, Guru Rinpoche attempted to suppress the demon King, Khikharathoed, who was exiled from Tibet. The demon escaped the wrath of the Guru Rinpoche and moved to Khempajong where he supposedly established his demon kingdom.

It is believed that after suppressing Khikharathoed in Khempajong, Guru Rinpoche moved to Singye Dzong for meditation. Today, it has an internal division of eight dzongs. Among the eight dzongs, Singye dzong is the main sacred place where Guru Rinpoche meditated. The other dzongs are the Rinchen Dzong, Tsemo Dzong, Gawa Dzong, Dulwa Dzong, Namkha Dzong, Drakri Dzong and Pema Dzong.

Singye Dzong claims further significance because the 19th century treasure discoverer Zilnon Namkha Dorji discovered a treasure at this site called Tse-Drup-Chimi-Sogthig- the religious scripture containing the means to prolong life.
