Genealogy of the Royal Family

  • Druk Gyalpo Ugyen Wangchuck was born to Jigme Namgyal and Pema Choki in 1862. Jigme Namgyal was the son of Pila Gonpo Wangyal of Dungkar choeje and Sonam Pelzom of Jangsa. Jigme Namgyal had two brothers and two sisters: Dorji, Dungkar Gyeltshen, Tshering Droma and Yudron. Dungkar Gyeltshen served as Trongsa Penlop.

The Royal Family of Bhutan has been an epitome of benevolence for the Bhutanese. They play a pivotal role in the eradication process of the ills of the society. Juvenile delinquency, poverty, youth issues and woman and children’s right are just some examples of areas where the energy of the Royal Family have been injected. Thanks to their patronage that the Bhutanese are now aware of curbing the social ills before it grows beyond control. Realizing that youth is the period of turmoil the Royal Family also plays a leading role in guiding the Bhutanese youth along the right trail.
